READING
The
Comprehensive Literacy Model (CLM) is the adopted literacy model for
MHK and NWH Elementary. Essential components are: Familiar
Reading, Circle Time, Shared Reading, Phonemic Awareness, Letter Identification/Sound
Work, Read Aloud, and the Writing Block. The vital connection
between reading and writing is another new aspect to this approach.
MATH
Math Investigations is a more "hands-on" approach that is
linked to the Arkansas Frameworks at each grade level. This adoption
should lead to more success for those who have had trouble with the
traditional textbook/lecture approach. The high rate of activity
forces the child to work with others, to think out solutions, and to
physically show why their solutions are correct.
COMPUTER INSTRUCTION
Students will be given instruction in Kids' College, Jedi, and other
supplementary computer programs. Each grade will receive 45 minutes
of computer laboratory time a week.
No formal grades will be grade.
SPELLING

SOCIAL STUDIES
1st
and 2nd Grade - Studies Weekly is the adopted curriculum for social
studies. Supplemental materials are also used to incorporate social
studies into reading and writing activities at this early elementary
level.
SCIENCE/HEALTH
Science kits based on the Arkansas Frameworks are used for instruction
and fulfillment of the 20% lab requirements.
MUSIC, LIBRARY and PHYSICAL EDUCATION
Each student will receive 45 minutes of instruction per week in music
and library skills based on the Arkansas Frameworks. They will
receive 60 minutes of physical education.
No formal grades will be given.
ARKANSAS
HISTORY
All students will receive instruction on the great state of Arkansas. In the
month of May, emphasis on state instruction will be scheduled for one entire
week. This celebration of learning is a climatic event for our school. Numerous
community presenters will instruct students during this week. Planning for this
week begins in early fall. This is an unforgettable learning experience for
students.
No formal grades will be given.
ADDITIONAL
INSTRUCTION
Students may receive additional assistance
in academic areas through our trained staff of paraprofessionals or other certified
professionals.
