Steps to Request Consideration for Early Graduation

  1. Application must be made between April 1st and July 30th of the sophomore year, or unless an extenuating circumstance is presented and can be verified.
  2. Pick up an early graduation application in the counselors’ office.  Complete the application and turn it in to your counselor.
  3. After the application has been turned in, your counselor will assign a meeting for you to determine if it is possible for you to be an early graduate.  You will receive an EARLY GRADUATION APPOINTMENT meeting form – which you and your guardian/parent must complete and return to your counselor.  NO more than 2 credits can be taken in night school, by correspondence, or by virtual high school. The student needs to show the academic ability to complete these credits successfully.  Please be aware that the costs of correspondence or college classes can be very expensive.  You MUST have a minimum of 14 completed credits at the end of your sophomore year.
  4. If it is determined that you are a potential candidate for early graduation, paperwork and a plan will be done at the early graduation meeting.  You must attend the early graduation meeting at the time specified unless arrangements are made to change the date – a parent/guardian MUST attend this meeting.
  5. A contract will be reviewed and signed and a graduation plan will be made - not following the graduation plan will immediately remove you from the early graduate program.  If you need a plan revision, it must be done with your counselor FIRST!
  6. All paperwork is then submitted to the early graduation committee for approval for early graduation.
  7. If the early graduation plan is approved, the student will be notified by note.
  8. The student then needs to fulfill the early graduation contract exactly as it was written

VERY IMPORTANT:  If any changes are made to the plan, those changes MUST be approved through Mrs. Parish/Mrs. Traylor

Note:

  1. The early graduate must complete all graduation requirements BEFORE the actual graduation date.
  2. Early graduates will NOT be considered seniors.  They will be invited to participate in such activities as ordering caps and gowns, invitations, etc.; however, they will not be in the composite photo or be ranked as a senior in any way until just prior to graduation.
  3. In the spring, early graduates will take their final exams at the same time as the seniors.  This is because of the need to accurately calculate final rank and gpa for all graduates.
  4. No student is considered to be a candidate for early graduation unless all paperwork is completed, all paperwork is approved, the student has been notified of the early graduation status, and the student is following the graduation plan that was written and agreed upon.

OPTIONS FOR GAINING CREDITS FOR EARLY GRADUATION OR FOR OTHER CREDIT RECOVER PRIOR TO GRADUATION:

    1. ARKANSAS VIRTUAL HIGH SCHOOL – This option is taken through the Arkansas Virtual High School program.  It is a computer-based program.  The list of classes offered by AVHS are the typical classes offered in Arkansas Public Schools.  Students are responsible for logging on the computer daily and doing the work assigned.  There is an on-line teacher who facilitates the courses.  Students receive the grade they make on their transcript – even if that grade is an F.  If a student fails to do his/her part in the course, the instructor/coordinator has the right to drop that student and give him/her an F for the transcript.  MHHS has nothing to do with these courses other than adding the grades to the transcript.  Enrollment is limited to the first week or two of each semester.
    2. Arkansas State Mountain Home – ASU-MH requires a 3.0 grade point average and a 19 ACT in the area of study (or the student can take the COMPASS on the ASU-MH campus and pass).  Courses taken at ASU-MH must be approved by the student’s counselor.  Any course taken without prior approval can be denied as credit at MHHS.  Some courses do not lend themselves to dual credit.  Many courses have specific requirements to count as a particular credit for high school.  Enrollment is set by ASU-MH.
    3. Correspondence at the University of Missouri.  This is a correspondence option.  The student enrolls in the high school portion of U of M at Columbia to take high school courses.  All work is either done on computer or through the mail.  There are two tests per course – a mid-term and a final.  Grades are based on coursework done and the two tests.  The counselors at MHHS are approved to test for the U of M and all tests can be taken in our office (room 101).  The paperwork for this option is obtained through the MHHS counselors’ office.  Enrollment is open and can be done anytime during the year.
