REQUIREMENTS FOR COLLEGE CORE COURSES

    College Admission:  The college core courses are recommended for the serious student who plans to register for college.  Completion of the college core courses is not required for general admission to some community colleges or technical schools; however, it may be required for unconditional admission to most universities and colleges.

 

    The recommended college core curriculum is required for the Arkansas Academic Challenge Scholarship.

  

    Honor Graduates:  Only students who complete the college core courses requirements cans graduate with honors.  Honor graduates are designated as follows:

Summa Cum Laude:  above 4.0 final GPA

Magna Cum Laude:  3.75-4.00 final GPA

Cum Laude:  3.50-3.74 GPA

 

    Advanced Placement:  Classes designated pre-Advanced Placement (pre-AP) or Advanced Placement (AP) are designed for the academically able student.  They are fast-paced, in-depth, challenging courses that require extra work at home and in class.  Teacher recommendation and previous classes in the pre-AP strand are suggested but not mandatory.  Parent permission required.

    Concurrent Credit:  Classes that are designated as concurrent credit classes are done through Arkansas State University Mountain Home and will be credited toward the student's high school diploma as well as being placed on an ASU-MH transcript as college hours earned.  There are two types of concurrent credit courses offered.  The first is courses which meet general education requirements or will transfer as academic electives in a four-year degree.  These courses are College Algebra, Composition I, Composition II, Human A & P, Principles of Accounting I, and German II.  The second type of concurrent credit courses that are designed for students who plan to earn a two-year degree.  These course, which are more specific in content, will apply only to specified two-year degrees.  These courses are Word Processing I, Word Processing II, Spreadsheet Application, Desktop Publishing, Computer Applications, Accounting I, Medical Terminology, and Introduction to Computers (Multimedia, Computer Concepts, or Advanced Computer Concepts--two of the three).

    Academy Choices:  Each student will select an academy in which he or she will gain career awareness and will learn core subjects in a way more interesting to the student.  Students make the selection during the registration process and finalize it with an advisor/parent/student conference in the spring.  A student is required to remain in the academy that he or she has chosen for a period of one school year.  During the registration process for the next school year, the student may continue to remain in his or her current academy or change to one of the other two academies.  Following ar the academy choices:

ACME-Architecture, Construction, Manufacturing, and Engineering

CAB-Communications, Arts, and Business

HHS-Health and Human Services

 

REQUIREMENTS FOR THE COLLEGE CORE DIPLOMA

4     Credits of English

.5    credit of Speech

3     credits of Science

          One credit must be Biology, one credit must be a physical science and one           additional credit must be either Chemistry or Physics

4     credits of Math

         Algebra A/Algebra B or Algebra I; Geometry or Investigative Geometry;                Algebra II; and a fourth credit beyond Algebra II 

3     credits of Social Studies

         1.5 must be U.S. History, 1 credit World History, and .5 credit Civics or American

         Government

1     credit of Physical Education

         Weight training, sports, or cheerleading/drill team

         One-half credit may be earned from band or ROTC; however, at least one-half

         credit MUST be from physical education

.5    credit of Health

.5    credit of Fine Arts

         Any course taught by the fine arts department will count.

1     credit of Practical Arts

         Any class taught in Business, Agriculture, Family and Consumer Science,

         Industrial Arts, Career Education, Computer Technology, Medical Professions,

         or Publications

2     credits of Foreign Language (both credits must be in the same language:

4.5  credits of electives

         Elective credits are ANY classes taken in addition to the required courses.  It

         does not matter if those credits are in the elective area or in a core subject

         area.  (The University of Arkansas requires 3 electives to be chosen from

         foreign language, oral communications, math, science, social studies, or

         computer science.)
